Easy Cut-Flower Gardening from Seed
Purchase Soil Blocking Equipment

Hi Lisa, I have a tiny bit of fuzzy mold growing from the bottom of my soil blocks this year. Is this from too much water? Not enough air? If so, how often should I water? Is there anything I can do about the mold? Thank you!

Hi Holly, typically doesn’t cause a problem. It occurs when the blocks stay wet continuously. I water every morning and the blocks are dry. Growing in an environment that is warm and causes the blocks to dry out in 24 hours is best. I water thoroughly so the blocks are watered all the way through. Hope this helps.

Hi, Lisa, I am a beginner with soil block gardening, what size are your trays and where do you get them? I really loved how you chose to leave watering space for the babies, that is something I think not very many people would think to do.

I use 2 sizes, 1 for commercial large volume of one variety of plants is a cafteria tray. When I need fewer plants I use the 5″ x7″ foam trays that hold 2 sets of small blocks. Both reuseable.

Hi Lisa, we are surface sowing flower seeds onto the mini blocks and are getting good germination on a homemade heated table, but when we move our trays to our light rack only about 30% of the seedlings are firmly rooting into the block, the rest grow on top/above and then fizzle and die. We’re using straight VC Fort Vee for block medium. Do you push your seedlings in after germination or do you have any tips for this problem? Does not appear to be damping off. We are bottom watering, have fans and in a room that is about 60-65 degrees.

Hmmm, be sure your are firmly sitting the seed on the surface. Is it all varieties or just one? I’ve only seen it happen a couple of times. VC mix should be fine. Let me know-

Do you use any humidity domes with your blocks?

No we don’t.

How far are your lights from the babies?
